What you can claim as work-related tax deductions
The ATO lets you deduct expenses you paid as part of earning your income, as long as you weren't reimbursed by your employer and you have the records to prove it. The most common categories are:
- Car and travel — driving between separate jobs or work sites (generally not your regular commute).
- Clothing and laundry — occupation-specific uniforms, protective gear and logo-branded clothing.
- Working from home — a share of running costs like electricity and internet for genuine work days.
- Phone and internet — the work-related portion of your plan, based on your usage.
- Tools and equipment — purchases you use for work, including depreciating costlier items over time.
- Self-education — courses and study that improve the skills or knowledge your current job needs.
- Union and professional fees — membership, registration and licence costs for your occupation.
Keep the records the ATO asks for
Most claims need a receipt or bank record, and every claim must relate to your job. If your total work expenses are $300 or less, receipts may not be strictly required — but the ATO can still ask how the spending related to your work, and good records make tax time painless. Losing a receipt is losing the deduction, which is why so many Australians end up claiming less than they're entitled to.
